Trumpeter Swan - Historic Range Map

The trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator) is the largest species of waterfowl in North America. Once common throughout North America, its population was drastically reduced by European settlement (1600 - 1800's) and during the swan-skin market of the mid to late 1800's.

In 1935, only 69 individuals were known to exist in the area of Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, Yellowstone National Park, and the surrounding area of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. In the 1950's previously unknown flocks were found in parts of Alaska and Canada. In 2000, a continent-wide survey found 23,647 individuals in the wild.
