CCME program releases first avalanche atlas for the Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR), Glacier National Park.

Video Description: This is the first avalanche atlas for the Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR), Glacier National Park, MT, and required 2 seasons of field data collection and spatial analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS). The atlas contains an overview of the avalanche paths, an image and spatial attributes for each path, and detailed descriptions. This avalanche atlas is a useful tool for both operational and research purposes. It is designed to provide a spatial understanding for all parties with an interest in the GTSR as well as a foundation for avalanche research and analysis. Establishing precise names and locations for each individual avalanche path allows for easier identification, communication, and planning. A video of a Google Earth flyover tour is a supplement to the avalanche atlas that provides to the general public an understanding of the natural phenomenon affecting the landscape.
